GentediMare would like to recognise all who are participating in Black History Month this year and who celebrate diversity in their lives daily. Earliest origins date back as far as 1915 when Carter G. Woodson of Washington, DC travelled to Chicago to participate in the fiftieth anniversary of emancipation which was being held there. Extremely successful, the event continued to evolve and is currently celebrated by millions all over North America each February.
The Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified on December 6, 1865, after the Civil War ended. It officially abolished slavery in America. The Thirteenth Amendment says: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction”.
